Russell Bigelow Blowers was born in Ohio on December 11, 1829. He came to California in 1851 and settled in Yolo County. After trying his fortunes in the gold fields, he became a fruit grower in the Sacramento Valley. Blowers developed raisin drying equipment, marketing his first California raisins in 1867. He was an active force in the marketing of California fruit. After his death on May 13, 1894, his orchards and vineyard company were run by his son Russell I. Blowers (who died April 29, 1912 at the age of 52). His daughter Carrie attended Mills College and the family was active in Yolo County affairs.
